Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez may have stirred controversy among Cristiano Ronaldo’s supporters after suggesting that Mohamed Salah is a “more complete” player than the Portuguese superstar.

Since joining Liverpool in 2017, Salah has cemented himself as a modern club legend. Eight years later, the Egyptian forward ranks third on the Reds’ all-time goalscoring list, with only Ian Rush and Roger Hunt ahead of him.

Benitez’s choice of Salah over Ronaldo is bound to spark debate, particularly given Ronaldo’s status as one of the greatest players in football history, often mentioned alongside Lionel Messi.

Speaking in South Korea, where he will manage a team of legends in the 2025 Icons Match, Benitez made the remark during an appearance on the YouTube channel Shoot For Love. Asked to select between a range of iconic forwards, the Spaniard eventually crowned Salah as his top pick.

Salah first went head-to-head with Tottenham hero Son Heung-Min, with Benitez opting for the Liverpool star despite being in Seoul. The Egyptian then faced off against former Reds captain Steven Gerrard, who himself had eliminated Fernando Torres in an earlier round.

Benitez’s verdict is sure to raise eyebrows among Liverpool fans too, many of whom still regard Gerrard as the club’s ultimate icon. While Salah’s impact is undeniable, some supporters will question choosing him over their legendary captain.

Still, when the debate is narrowed down to forwards alone, Salah has a strong case. Had the question been about the greatest all-round player, Benitez’s answer might have been very different.

Liverpool will head into today’s match missing several key players due to injuries and fitness concerns. Goalkeeper Alisson Becker remains sidelined with a hamstring injury and is not expected to return until after the upcoming international break, leaving a major gap between the posts. In defense, Giovanni Leoni is ruled out for the entire season following a serious knee injury, limiting Arne Slot’s options at the back. Meanwhile, Federico Chiesa is dealing with a minor muscle issue and has not been able to complete full training sessions, making him unavailable for selection. Hugo Ekitiké is also a doubt after sustaining a slight knock during the recent match against Galatasaray, and the medical team is assessing his condition before deciding on his involvement. These absences mean Liverpool will likely rely on backup players and younger talents to fill key roles. Arne Slot will need to adjust his tactics carefully to maintain the team’s rhythm and intensity, especially with several attacking and defensive stars missing. Despite these setbacks, Liverpool will look to show resilience and depth as they aim to secure a positive result in this crucial Premier League fixture.

Eberechi Eze is expected to play a key role in today’s match involving Arsenal, as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his attacking options. The versatile midfielder has been in impressive form and could be deployed on the left wing to complement Martin Ødegaard’s creativity in the center. Arteta faces a tactical decision on whether to start both Eze and Ødegaard together, as their combination could bring fluidity and unpredictability to Arsenal’s attack. Eze’s dribbling ability, pace, and eye for goal make him a valuable asset, especially against defensive teams that sit deep. His inclusion would also add more balance to Arsenal’s transitions, allowing the team to switch quickly from defense to attack. However, Arteta may also opt for a more cautious setup, rotating Eze to the bench and introducing him later in the game to exploit tired defenders. The decision will depend largely on the opponent’s setup and Arsenal’s recent form. Regardless, Eze’s presence in the squad boosts competition for attacking places and provides Arteta with tactical flexibility. Fans are eager to see how Eze’s flair and creativity will influence the team’s overall performance in this crucial fixture.
